EPFL : Life in Tech Uni

Posted in building, misc by tot on June 20, 2009

I feel familiar with atmosphere of engineering department in universities. Students and researchers enjoy discussing in mensa, some are in unique outfits (well, not in fashion) and you can hear english other than french.. EPFL(Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne)’s campus buildings are mostly connected with each other by corridors and bridges where you find architectural elements such as space frame, prefabricated aluminum panels, etc. That makes you feel like kind of industrial campus, except this new building, Rolex Learning Center.

The architects SANAA create new relations of interior-exterior (can be more complex, interior-(exterior)-interior..), and dissolve  rigidity of universal space here by this unique shape, although typologically it is a mat building, which Smithsons once defined after Venice Hospital by Le Corbusier (at that time, Berlin Free Uniersity was under construction and was supposed to represent this new term).
